The Most Serene Republic of San Marino or
San Marino is one of the smallest nations in the world.
Positioned in southern Europe, it is an enclave of Italy, and is
one of the European microstates. San Marino is claimed to be the
oldest republic in the world. San Marino was founded in
AD 301 by Marinus from Rab, a Christian stonemason fleeing the
religious persecution of Roman Emperor Diocletian. San
Marino is the third-smallest country in Europe, with only Vatican
City and Monaco being smaller. The third smallest state in
Europe (after the Holy See and Monaco) also claims to be the
world's oldest republic. The topography is dominated by the
Apennines mountain range, and it has a rugged terrain. The highest
point in the country, Monte Titano, is situated at 749 m (2,457 ft)
above sea level.
The climate is Mediterranean, with warm
summers and mild winters.
According to tradition, it was
founded by a Christian stonemason named Marino in 301 A.D. San
Marino's foreign policy is aligned with that of Italy. Social and
political trends in the republic also track closely with those of
its larger neighbour.
Population: 29,251 (July 2006 estimate)
Area:
61.2 km2
Climate: Mediterranean; mild to cool
winters; warm, sunny
summers |
